41st World Diamond Congress

They say the best way to predict the future is to create it and that’s exactly the energy I felt at the World Diamond Congress in Singapore last week. I had the honor of listening to some of the most influential voices in the diamond world. From deep dives into gemology and history to critical discussions on supply chain integrity and consumer messaging, transparency and trust; every panel was a masterclass. Being surrounded by such a diverse group of experts, from GIA  executives to global trade leaders, ministers, Chairman; was a truly enriching experience. Mr. Pritesh Patel and Dr. Wuyi Wang of the GIA provided some of the most significant perspectives of the Congress. Mr. Patel, GIA’s President and CEO, underscored the Institute’s commitment to our trade’s heritage, supported by a dedicated team of 148 researchers, geologists, and engineers. He spoke passionately about the consumer experience, emphasizing that transparency and supply chain integrity are the core of lasting confidence. As he noted, ‘Our education is among the best in the industry. With 180,000 alumni worldwide, we are constantly evaluating and improving our curriculum.’ Dr. Wuyi Wang, GIA’s Senior Vice President, brought a different kind of energy, reminding us that natural diamonds are far more than just gemstones; they are nature’s true wonders. From GIA’s acquisition to its expanding global footprint, this session gave us a rare, unscripted look at the Institute’s future. It wasn’t just a status update, it was a direct roadmap of the research legacy and strategic priorities that will define GIA’s next chapter. It was an absolute pleasure to have a brief conversation with both of them during Congress; they struck me not only as incredibly smart, driven leaders but as people of genuine kindness. A special highlight for me was the call for unity. As we navigate a changing landscape, being reminded that we are ‘one family’ was a powerful takeaway. I am walking away not just with new knowledge, but with a deeper appreciation for the people behind the stones. I’m coming home inspired, informed, and more excited about the future of our industry.. And last but not least. A major highlight of the Congress was the election of the new President of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB). I watched as Yoram Dvash gracefully passed this leading role to Mehul Shah, a historic moment, as Mehul becomes the first President from India in the Federation’s history. With four decades of experience as the former WFDB Treasurer-General and Chairman of the Gemmological Institute of India, Mehul is a proven leader perfectly suited to navigate the challenges ahead. Congratulations, Mehul! I came back with a deeper sense of optimism. Our industry is at a turning point, and I am grateful to have been part of these essential conversations as we work to tell a better, more honest story about the diamonds we love.
